What is intellectual integrity?

A person of integrity behaves in an ethical manner.

Honest students only use authorized documentation during an exam, and they properly cite their sources in an assignment, for example. They avoid passing off another person’s efforts and ideas as their own. Thus, they adopt attitudes expected from the best managers.

In an academic context, unethical behavior can take various forms, including plagiarism, cheating, and fraud. They are considered violations.

Examples of academic violations

Fraud Modifying or falsifying a document (a transcript or medical certificate, for example).
Cheating Copying from another student’s exam paper.
Using prohibited material during an exam.
Plagiarism

Not citing, as per established practices, the documentation sources in an assignment.
Handing in for evaluation an assignment that was written or done fully or partly by another person.

Important! The Regulation regarding the intellectual integrity of students at HEC Montréal imposes sanctions based on the severity of the academic violations. These sanctions range from a simple warning to permanent expulsion. They are systematically inserted in the student’s file.

How does HEC Montréal promote intellectual integrity?

HEC Montreal considers the academic integrity of students as a core value. This is one of the main guarantees of excellence for the diplomas it issues and professionalism of the managers it trains.

Resources promoting success

Unethical behavior is often a reflection of a lack of knowledge of good practices - how to properly identify sources, for example. It can also stem from an organizational problem or poor preparation.

HEC Montréal offers many resources to help you find your way around and increase your chances of success.

A regulation regarding the intellectual integrity of students

HEC Montréal takes violations of intellectual integrity very seriously. It has a regulation that describes prohibited behavior, disciplinary procedures and sanctions applicable for violations.

Ask about it!

  • Actions that are often considered inconsequential by some are academic violations. This can include, for example, some information exchanges while carrying out individual tasks.
  • Sanctions under the regulation can have serious consequences for a management career.

Similarity analysis software

HEC Montréal uses a similarity detection software to ensure fairness towards honest students, and also to improve the methodological quality in academics. This tool helps identify cases of plagiarism and facilitates the decision-making process of teachers in such situations.

The software is integrated into the ZoneCours Work Submission tool. It compares the document submitted to it with information found on the Internet and also with papers presented in previous years.

The software does not make decisions in the place of the teachers. It points out the similarities that are detected and enables the latter to decide which ones might constitute plagiarism.

When the teacher suspects a case of plagiarism, he or she must notify the program office handling the case, in accordance with the Regulation regarding the intellectual integrity of students.

And what can you do?

Acquire good practices

Intellectual integrity is a matter of ethics. It is a skill that requires the acquisition of many skills: learning to cite sources, manage time, and study effectively; improving writing skills, for example.

Acquiring these skills will contribute to your academic success and help develop your managerial skills.

Learn to identify unethical behavior

Some behaviors are easily identifiable as unethical (cheating, for example). But other academic violations are less obvious and may be committed unintentionally. Thus, the following examples are violations:

  • The mere possession of prohibited material during an exam (even if the student does not use these documents).
  • Copy-pasting and using content from the Internet without citing references: newspaper articles or magazines, online encyclopaedias, etc.
