Research data management

What is a data management plan?

Data management plans help researchers choose the best methods for managing their research data. These plans describe how data is collected, formatted, stored and shared. They facilitate the reuse of research data by specifying its nature and how it is to be used.

Using these plans also helps researchers identify the costs, benefits and challenges of research data management.

The plan must:

  • be created at the outset of the research project, so that it can be presented to the Ethics Committee for Research Involving Humans, if necessary, or when the grant application is submitted;
  • cover all stages in the life cycle of a research project, from inception to dissemination and use of results;
  • be adapted and updated as the research project progresses.

Do I need to draw up a data management plan (DMP) to apply for funding?

How to build a research data management plan

The DMP Assistant is a bilingual tool to help prepare a data management plan (DMP). Based on international standards and best practices in data management, it guides the researcher step-by-step through the key issues involved in developing the plan.

You'll find a list of templates by funding agency, as well as the default template (Portage Template), which is the generic template to use. We've customized the tool to target specific questions for which funding agencies expect answers.

When creating your account in the DMP Assistant, please select HEC Montréal as the institution.

You'll then have a choice of different DMP models. If the specific models don't suit you, we suggest the "Portage Template".
