Zotero - English

Zotero is a free, open source bibliographic management software.

Sharing

Why use groups?

  • To share collections with colleagues for a team project;
  • To discover new resources on topics that interest you;
  • To find out what members of your institution or program are working on.

How do I create a Zotero group?

1. Open Zotero and/or log in to your Zotero (online) account;

2. In Zotero (software), click on the briefcase icon (see image below) and click on New Group - you will be redirected to a page of Zotero online to Create a New Group. *you may also access this page via Zotero online by clicking on the Groups tab in your library and then Create a New Group.

3. Choose the name and the privacy setting you want for the group.

Zotero group privacy levels

  • Public (Open Membership) : anyone can become a member of this group (without any form of control);
  • Public (Closed Membership) : the group page is visible to everyone, but only people invited or validated by the administrators can become members;
  • Private Membership : only users who are part of the group can see the group pages. It is impossible to find these groups in search engines.

Managing a Zotero group

  • To manage the account settings, click on "Manage Profile", "Manage Members" or "Manage Library";
  • To add or modify references to the group's library, click on "Group Library";
  • The management of group references is done in much the same way as the management of personal references.

Synchronization

Why should I synchronize?

  • To access your entire reference collection from any computer;
  • To store a copy of your library items on the Zotero server.

How to synchronize automatically:

  1. Open Zotero;
  2. Select ''Preferences'' from the drop-down Edit menu;
  3. Click on the ''Sync'' tab;
  4. Enter your username and password* (*created for Zotero online. If you haven,t created an online account yet, this is an alternate way to do so);
  5. Check the boxes allowing automatic synchronization of references and files.
