Inserting a citation

The function « Cite While You Write » (CWYW) allows you to insert a cited author from an EndNote library into a Word text and automatically generate the bibliography at the end of the document.

There are two possible methods :

1. Insert the citation from within EndNote by using the Tools > Cite While You Write (CWYW) > Insert Citation command.

OR

2. Insert the citation through Word:

  • Position the cursor (|) where the citation should be inserted in your document.
  • Under the EndNote 20 tab, click Go to EndNote.
  • Select the desired reference(s) from your EndNote library.
  • Click on Insert Citation ()

NOTE : Enable Instant Formatting for automatic updating (Word EndNote tab, Bibliography group). If automatic updating is disabled, the cited authors appear in a temporary form, e.g. {Mintzberg, 1979 #40}. Click on Update Citations and Bibliography to format.

Editing a citation

To add a page, remove the author from the brackets or remove a citation.

  1. In the Word document, position the cursor on the citation to be modified or removed
  2. Click on Edit & Manage Citation(s) in the EndNote tab of Word
  3. To remove the citation
    1. Click on the arrow in the Edit Reference drop-down menu
    2. Click on Remove Citation
  4. To add a page
    • indicate only its number without any other information on the line Pages
  5. To remove the author from the brackets
    • Click on the Formatting drop-down menu
    • Click on Display as: Author (Year)
  6. To change the order of the citations in the bracket
    • Click on the upward arrow to move the quote to the beginning of the bracket
    • Click on the downward arrow to move the quote to the end of the bracket

Editing the bibliography

  1. Open the EndNote library containing the document references.
  2. Click on the arrow in the Bibliography box on the EndNote tab (in Word).
  3. Click on the Layout tab.
  4. Change the indentation of the references and the spacing between references
  5. Click on OK.
